Plastic Surgery Patients Get Psych Referrals

Plastic Surgery Patients Get Psych Referrals

Plastic surgery patients at a London clinic are getting referrals to psychologists– approximately 20 percent of them, anyway. Learn why in this report from Plastic Surgery News.

Girl at PsychologistA London clinic called Mybreast reports that about 20 percent of their plastic surgery patients also get referrals to psychologists. The reason? These patients express unrealistic expectations about their looks that suggest they may have psychological issues.

Reportedly, most of these patients are women, though some men get referred as well.

Commenting on this statistic, clinic surgeon Dr. Stephen Hamilton explained that some of these patients are soon diagnosed with a mental disorder and are then rejected for plastic surgery.

London psychologist Dr. Alex Clarke explained that undergoing plastic surgery can put certain patients at risk for problems like eating disorders or body dysmorphic disorder. Video plays below.
