The Tummy Tuck Procedure

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

Plastic Surgery Channel Expert Dr. Mark Elliot from Meridian, Mississippi explains the  popular plastic surgery procedure Tummy Tuck.

A tummy tuck is an operation where the extra skin and soft tissue of the abdomen and especially the lower abdomen is removed and the poochy abdomen is corrected at the same time. This procedure flattens one’s abdomen by removing extra fat and skin, and tightening muscles in the abdominal wall as well. There are patients in whom the area around the stomach is a cause of concern as the same may have excess skin and cause the patient to not feel their best.   A lot of people after they have lost considerable amount of weight also suffer from excess skin around their abdomen which does not allow them to enjoy the fruits of their labor during the weight loss. The tummy tuck procedure is extremely popular amongst such people who are looking to redefine and change the appearance of their stomach without drastically altering the look and feel of any other part of the body. This is also not an operation to remove a lot of fat from the stomach but simply one to correct the extra skin and fullness. While women form majority of the patient base, tummy tucks are also performed on men who suffer from similar problems.

Another reason why the procedure is so popular is that a lot of women seem to have the same condition with some amount of excess tissue in their stomach region especially women who have had children. These women suffer from fullness in their lower abdomen and some excess soft tissue that they dislike.   A lot of women struggle with their post pregnancy weight which they cannot seem to shed off.  Once the weight is lost, they are left with excess unsightly skin which doesn’t allow them to return to their pre pregnancy lives. The skin, muscles and fat in the abdomen region begins to sag aggravating the problem.

Tummy tuck is also a part of the package of procedures commonly known as a Mommy makeover. This is a set of procedures requested by women who have had children and have extra skin and extra laxity in their stomach wall. A mommy makeover includes a set of plastic surgery procedures which combat the negative physical effects of childbirth and restore the body parts to a pre pregnancy condition.

The satisfaction rate with tummy tuck procedures is extremely high. Patients are usually very satisfied as the procedure does exactly as what it said it would do. The bonus with an abdominoplasty is that the scar is well hidden under clothes and women can wear any clothes they want to such as jeans, bikinis,  even wear clothes that show a little bit of their lower stomach.

However, not all patients are ideal for a tummy tuck procedure. An ideal patient would be at a stable and healthy weight and would be in relatively good shape except for the excess skin or fat in the abdominal area. The patient must want to correct only that specific area and must have realistic expectations from the surgery. The recovery time involved in a tummy tuck procedure is slightly on the higher side. Most people would require at least 1 -3 weeks before they can return to their normal routine. Even post that rigorous and strenuous activities and physical labor would not be advised.
