Blake Lively stars in the upcoming The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, an aggressively weird drama that includes Lively led on a dog leash by Julianne Moore.
Blake Lively, known mostly for the show Gossip Girl, is in an upcoming movie called The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, which sees her alongside giants Julianne Moore, Alan Arkin, Keanu Reeves, Robin Wright Penn and Winona Ryder. The film’s writer-director is Rebecca Miller, who also wrote the original novel and is married to Daniel-Day Lewis.
All this prestige-by-association is the good news for Lively. The bad news could be that it’s all part of a dark comedy-drama possibly too eccentric for its own good. But the film, currently in limited release, is still mostly sight unseen and may well accomplish its intentions.
Lively stars as the young adult version of Pippa Lee, a troubled, drug-addicted girl who seeks and finds romance with a man 30 years her senior. In later life, when the man cheats on her, Pippa – played now by Penn – indulges in her own affairs, plus methamphetamines. At both stages of her life, the husband is played by veteran actor Alan Arkin.
In one scene, Lively appears to be nude and snuggling with the 75-year-old actor. Shooting for the film began in April 2008, and in May 2009, Lively was rumored to have undergone breast augmentation for a slight increase in bust size. That isn’t confirmed, and if she did this, it may have been after she filmed Pippa Lee. (If she had implants beforehand, one wonders about the view Arkin got.)
Another of the film’s more interesting moments shows Lively on a dog leash during a photo shoot. Moore, who plays her lesbian aunt, is the photographer.
“It sounds bizarre, but it was exciting for me because I never really went through that dark and wild stage, so to get to explore that in the safety of a movie set was great,” Lively recently told Parade magazine.
As strange as this movie seems, Lively still isn’t likely to go through anything as dark and wild in real life.
