Cosmetic Surgery in California May Require a Check Up

Cosmetic surgery patients in California may soon be required to undergo a check up prior to surgery. The state is reviewing legislation aimed at ensuring those who undergo elective cosmetic surgery are fit and healthy. The proposed “Donda West Law” is named for rap star Kanye West’s mother, who died after cosmetic surgery in November 2007.

donda_west_law_considered_in_CAFor the second time in as many years, the state of California is reviewing legislation aimed at ensuring those who undergo elective cosmetic surgery are fit and healthy.

The proposed Donda West Law is named for rap star Kanye West’s mother, who died after cosmetic surgery in November 2007. Authorities concluded that she had coronary disease and other health issues that should have been detected.

The bill would require patients to receive a physical before elective cosmetic surgery.

Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter, a Democrat representing Rialto, said the legislation targets “fly-by-night” doctors focused on cash flow, who don’t adequately screen their patients.

The legislation is backed by the 17-member California Medical Board. The Assembly passed the bill on a bipartisan vote last month. And the Senate Business and Professions Committee also approved the measure.

But California’s department of Consumer Affairs opposes the measure, saying adequate legislation already exists, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar measure last year.

Will his veto be bach? We’ll keep you up to date.

This seems like a pretty good idea to me. Don’t most PS already require a physical though?
