Plastic surgery is increasingly popular among the men of Dubai, a trend some believe is driven by a downturn in the nation’s economy. Yet, despite the country’s economic woes, patients have the money to pay for a myriad of cosmetic procedures.
Ah, exotic Dubai! Where skyscrapers spring from desert sands… Rolls-Royces are sold by the six-pack… and male breast reduction is all the rage among the smart set.
It seems that, compared to guys from other countries, men from the oil-rich emirate of Dubai are 20 percent more likely to check in for a breast reduction, at least according to the Dubai Congress on Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine (DCAAAM).
Although the people of Dubai are not known for wearing revealing clothing, somebody must be looking — according to surgeons at DCAAAM, most patients are seeking surgical solutions for their flabby abdomens, budding breasts and adipose arms — and despite the economic downturn, they have the cash to pay for it.
Whatever their patients’ motivations, the strong demand for cosmetic surgery means beaucoup bucks for the surgical profession: if you add in the amount spent on facial and skin rejuvenation, hair care, and body contouring in Dubai for both sexes, it comes to the tidy sum of $64 billion per year.
But why the sudden thirst for cosmetic improvement among the men of Dubai? Spokesmen from DCAAAM say that it’s partially driven by the current economic crisis.
It seems that recent low oil prices and other economic effects have created a time of relative financial hardship for some in Dubai, leading to a crisis of self-confidence.
Lower-cost procedures, such as skin refining and permanent hair removal, along with outpatient nip-and-tuck work, can be a sort of therapy for men who have seen their status slide from “insanely wealthy” to merely “fabulously wealthy”.
And since Dubai is no desert backwater — it’s a high-tech oasis, and home to many cosmetic surgical practices boasting the latest in technology — there’s no longer any reason for locals to travel abroad for plastic surgery. As a result, the folks at DCAAAM figure that the amount spent by the local lads on cosmetic treatment will rise to more than 100 billion U.S. dollars per year by 2013.
