New computer software may soon allow more women to undergo breast reconstruction after beating cancer. According to a new study, the software can make women more aware of their surgical options.
Two hospitals in Massachusetts participated in a study of women who had undergone surgery for breast cancer. Most of the women were given access to computer software that included information about various breast reconstruction options and what to expect before and after surgery.
And, most of the women who used this software not only chose to undergo reconstruction, but were strongly involved in what kind of surgery they had.
One study showed only 20 percent of breast cancer patients undergo breast reconstruction – likely because they lack the proper information. Increased awareness may raise that low percentage. Video plays below.
