Top Cosmetic Procedures for 2008

A national survey released recently says that the top surgical procedure in plastic surgery for 2008 was breast augmentation.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, or ASAPS, has been collecting data, along with an independent research firm, on cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures between 1997 and 2008, and data shows an incredible increase of 162% in cosmetic procedures since they began collecting statistics.

With the constant creation of new and innovative technologies, non-surgical procedures have increased a whopping 239% and may be the cause for a decline of 15% of surgical procedures since 1997.  Over 9.3 million women and 800,000 men opted to have cosmetic procedures in 2008.

This survey also revealed that 56% of Americans approve of cosmetic surgery and with that approval, over two-thirds of men and women surveyed said that they would not be embarrassed to tell others they had cosmetic surgery.

In the past twelve years, liposuction has held the title for the most popular surgical procedure, which was the most popular procedure among men.  It is thought that breast augmentation took the crown due to silicon implants having a return to the market and other trends.

Dr. Alan Gold, President of the Aesthetic Society says that no doubt this turnabout from liposuction to breast augmentation will generate discussions in the medical community and the public at large.  He adds that changes in fashion and the popularity of chest baring styles might be a factor behind this change.
