Understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Body dismorphic disorder causes a person to be excessively preoccupied with part of their appearance, to the point that it severely affects their self-esteem or interferes with their daily activities. Of course, if you are considering plastic surgery, odds are there is something about your appearance you don’t like or want to correct. So, how do you know if you just want to improve how you look, or you’re obsessing? Dr. Trish Henrie specializes in pre-surgery psychological screening for plastic surgery patients, and in this interview from the 2009 Aesthetic Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, she explains the symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder, and how doctors and prospective patients can make the distinction.
