Breast augmentation revision expert Dr. Caroline Glicksman discusses important pearls for patients
Why do people have breast augmentation revision?
Even in the face of proper planning and execution of a breast implant surgery, changes can and do occur leading to the consideration of undergoing breast implant revision surgery. These changes can be implant-related or from natural changes in the breast tissue such as after childbirth and breast-feeding.
The most common causes of breast augmentation revision are:
- capsular contracture
- implant malposition
- size exchange
How do you avoid revisional surgery?
Sometimes it is unavoidable, but may times it is. First and foremost make sure to do your homework on who is doing your breast surgery. Not only go to a Board certified Plastic Surgeon, but one with a proven expertise in breast surgery. Publications in peer reviewed journals, invitations/ speaking engagements at national meetings and high reviews from existing patients is the simple triad of how you can confirm true expertise in breast surgery. Advertisements do not confirm anyone’s expertise in any type of surgery. Don’t get fooled by paid advertisements including most of the “Best Doctors/Plastic Surgeons in City X“ which are much more about who want to pay the magazine than any actual selection process.
Despite doing your homework – some patients will inevitably require a revisional breast surgery. Talk about all your options with your surgeons and do not rush into any revision procedure. Make sure to get all the facts for breast augmentation revision.
