Today’s Breast Augmentation is Better, Faster and Offers Choices

“Breast Augmentation today is so much different than it was just a few years ago,” says Dr. Louis P. Bucky, a board certified plastic surgeon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Below, he talks about the differences and the wide variety of choices women have in breast augmentation surgery.

The difference in breast augmentation today has to do with two areas; the patient consultation and the actual surgery.  It’s really a matter of choices and advances in technology that allow patients a better experience and a better outcome.

The Consultation

Patients deserve to know what they’re going to look like after surgery. We routinely use 3-D imaging, and without it I think it’s very hard for a patient to fully understand what their final appearance will be. Patients also need to be fully informed about the recovery process and the safety of the surgery.

 Surgical Process

Breast Implant ChoicesThe surgical process for breast augmentation is also tremendously different.  It’s no longer a choice of just saline versus silicone breast implants.  We now have choices between round and shaped and also between textured versus smooth implants. We’ll help you decide which one is best for your particular body type.

We carefully analyze each patient’s anatomy; what their skin tissue is like and the dimensions of their breast and body. Another decision that’s made between the patient and surgeon is where the incisions are made and whether the implants are placed under or over the muscle.

We now have the opportunity to use fat, not instead of implants, but with implants. Fat helps to soften the edges, the upper pole of the breast, and fat can give you a more natural appearance, especially if you’re a very thin person.

There are also some patients who would have a better result with a breast lift along with implants. All of these decisions take time and it can be accomplished very effectively by good communication and embracing some of the technology we utilize.

Rapid Recovery Breast Augmentation

Through careful surgical planning and more importantly, careful surgical technique, we are able to do what we call Rapid Recovery Breast Augmentation.  Patients are able to have their operation, spend a little time in the recovery room, take a nap, come home, wake up and take two Advil or Tylenol and then function normally that same day.

Breast augmentation for me is a very exciting area where we’ve been able to great progress in plastic surgery.  In essence, we are customizing the operation to give every patient their absolute best outcome.
