Carnie Wilson Hosts Newlywed Game’s First Gay Married Couple

Carnie Wilson, who hosts The Newlywed Game, presented the first gay married couple in the show’s history.

Carnie WilsonCarnie Wilson made history of sorts when she played host to The Newlywed Game‘s first gay married couple in the show’s 43-year-history.

The lucky pair? George Takei – long known as Sulu of Star Trek – and new husband Brad Altman. They were partners for 21 years before finally marrying. The episode aired October 13.

“Proposition 8 was passed in California, and there’s a whole group of people who cannot enjoy what we’re enjoying,” Takei told Gather News. “And to get on The Newlywed Game hopefully will demonstrate to many of those decent, fair-minded people out there that our wedding is not unlike all the others.”

The Newlywed Game, of course, has become a television icon and goes back before host Wilson’s time – it began with presenter Bob Eubanks in 1966. Wilson’s hosting gig for thisGame Show Network version began in April 2009, and came after her publicized weight struggles.

Wilson had gastric bypass surgery in 1999, which spared her of 150 extra lbs., and prevented some health problems, but left her with loose skin. In 2002, she underwent many plastic surgery procedures – including a breast lift, a tummy tuck and liposuction on her stomach and hips.

“When I woke up, I couldn’t believe it,” she told People in 2002. “I’ve never looked down and not had a belly in my entire life! It felt incredible.”

Wilson later posed nude for Playboy to display the results and later after that, regained some of the weight. A 2006 appearance on Celebrity Fit Club helped prune it away.

In recent years, Carnie Wilson has gotten a lot of her attention by virtue of her appearance – its improvements and setbacks. But, with The Newlywed Game‘s new inclusion of gay couples, this time it may not be all about her after all.
