Millions of women who worry about their weight may be able rest a bit easier, thanks to a new study that shows men prefer a curvier figure. Not only that, but the effect of a curvy woman can have on a male brain is similar to the intoxication experienced with alcohol and illegal drugs.

Researchers at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia scanned the brains of 14 young men as they looked at before and after pictures of nude women who had plastic surgery to give them more shapely hips. The woman’s weight was not reduced, just redistributed by implanting fat harvested from the waist and buttock.

In the study, seeing the pictures of the women post-op excited the brain’s “reward centers” — regions typically activated by alcohol and drugs. The study suggests that the presumption that males judge the attractiveness of a female by assessing her body fat are based on society’s expectations rather than tendencies that are hard-wired in the brain.

Women with hourglass figures, or high waist to hip ratios, proved particularly stimulating, according to the findings. Lead researcher Steven Platek, an evolutionary cognitive neuoscientist, attributes this to the fact that shapely hips in women have often been linked overall good health, and the ability to carry healthy babies.

The study also found that general changes in a woman’s body mass index (BMI) only affected the area of the brain that was linked to simple visual evaluations, like size and shape. This may be further proof that body fat influences the perception of female beauty as a result of societal norms more than brain wiring.

“The media portrays women as wholly too skinny,” Platek told FoxNews.com. “It’s not just about body fat, or body mass index.”

For women whose natural curves don’t measure up to the “optimal design”, as determined by the researchers, the study findings demonstrate the benefits of procedures like breast and buttock augmentation. After all, more curves are not just more appealing, they’re downright intoxicating. And what woman wouldn’t want to make a man drunk with lust?

Platek and his colleague Devendra Singh detailed their findings in the online journal PLoS ONE

Across the world, millions of young women have grown up hearing, “You look just like your mother.” Now, they can know what to expect in the years to come, thanks to a new study from Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Using computer modeling and 3D cameras to examine the faces of 40 mother-daughter pairs, the Plastic Surgery Research team found that mothers and daughters who look similar also age in a strikingly similar pattern. When measuring the changes in the aging female face, they found that volume loss in the lower eyelid began when women were in their mid-30s and progressed steadily through life. If a mother demonstrated this type of sagging, her daughter was likely to, as well.

However, women who mirror their moms needn’t surrender their face to destiny just yet. Thanks to breakthroughs in cosmetics and skin treatments, women today know a lot more about avoiding signs of aging than our mothers did when they were young. And recognizing how your mother’s face changed over the years could help guide a plastic surgeon in the appropriate procedures to address similar patterns of sagging skin or volume loss. For example, doctors would be able to pinpoint the appropriate areas to inject dermal fillers, such as Juvederm or Restylane, says Dr. Subhas Gupta, who led the research team at Loma Linda.

The new findings may be especially helpful for women in their mid-30s to early 50s, which is the ideal window for using minimally invasive techniques to maintain a youthful appearance. Other ways to slow the aging process naturally including eating healthy, limiting sun exposure, and not smoking, Dr. Gupta notes.

New rejuvenation procedures may be effective in correcting frowning mouth deformity, according to a new study.

Currently available techniques only offer partial correction of the frowning mouth, the study authors noted. However, new surgical techniques involving lentiform excisions at the vermilion border (the exposed red portion of the lip) and at the marionette folds are effective at correcting frowning mouth deformities, a condition caused by sagging at the corners of the mouth.

The study followed 27 patients who went under the knife between 2000 and 2009 in an attempt to correct their frowning mouth deformity . The deformities and the methods of correction were divided into two separate types. In type I frowning mouth deformity, correction was performed by lentiform excisions at the vermilion border, and in type II deformity, lentiform excisions also included the marionette folds, which are the lines that radiate down from the corners of the mouth.

In some cases, patients opted to have a face lift in addition to the procedure to correct their frowning. The satisfaction in these patient’s results were the same. Correction of frowning mouth abnormalities, either as an isolated procedure or in addition to a face lift, resulted in satisfactory results for all 27 patients.

After undergoing the surgery, all patients were followed for a minimum of three months, and 88.9 percent were followed for a full year. Of the patients, 18.8 percent showed erythema (or redness of skin) and scar hypertrophy (which is a raised scar) at the sites of marionette fold removal during the early postoperative period. However, all scars improved over time, and doctors reported high patient satisfaction.

Researchers concluded that proper patient selection and counseling to deal with the temporary or possibly permanent noticeable scar formation are of utmost importance. When these measures are taken, the outcome is good and patients are satisfied with the end result.

Study results appear in the February 2010 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

There was a time when few people would openly admit that they had undergone or were considering a cosmetic procedure. Even some celebrities prefer to keep quiet about procedures they have had in fear of being judged by the public, as well as friends and associates. However, those fears are beginning to change, according to a new study.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) has just released results of a consumer survey about current attitudes and the perceptions surrounding cosmetic surgery. The focus of the survey was on how “accepted” it is in the mainstream to have had work done.

The results aren’t too surprising: 71 percent of respondents think society is now less judgmental about plastic surgery than it was even five years ago. 62 percent of those surveyed feel that this less judgmental outlook has made them personally more comfortable when thinking about getting a procedure.

Dr. Mark Berman, AACS President-Elect, says the data only confirms what many patients and plastic surgeons have felt for a long time – that cosmetic surgery has become mainstream.

“A variety of factors have contributed to the normalization of our industry, but the bottom line is that people are not afraid to talk openly about cosmetic surgery anymore,” he said in a press statement.

The most accepted surgical procedures were breast augmentation, face lifts, and tummy tucks while the most accepted non surgical procedures were Botox and laser hair removal.

Younger respondents embraced the notion of a nip and tuck more so than their older counterparts, with twice as many people under age 40 saying they would consider a procedure in the future than those over age 40. And, although the overall consensus is that cosmetic surgery is more acceptable, only 52 percent of survey respondents said they would tell family if they were going under the knife.

A psychiatric expert has proposed Botox as a treatment for depression.

Eva Ritvo, M.D., author and vice-chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Miami, shared a memory in a recent Psychology Today blog. She wrote about seeing the Michael Jackson concert film This Is It and feeling moved to tears afterward. When Ritvo tried to cry, she found that she couldn’t, due to muscle paralysis caused by a recent Botox injection.

“Curious,” she wrote. “But even more surprisingly, when I couldn’t cry, I quickly stopped feeling sad. I felt so odd that I couldn’t find those emotions.”

She wrote that the emotion of sadness seemed to disappear after it couldn’t be fully expressed – and added that this experience repeated a few times in the following weeks. “The emotions lingered a bit but felt ‘unreal’ and disconnected,” she wrote. Ritvo cited the “facial feedback theory,” which is the connection between the physical expression of an emotion and the intensity of that emotion. She also cited a 2006 experiment where dermatologist Eric Finzi injected Botox into the frown lines of several depressed women. After two months, the women no longer showed depression signs.

“Is that because looking better makes us feel better? Is it because our faces can’t provide negative feedback such as frowning, scowling and crying?” she wrote. “Are we more appealing to others when we look happy and this triggers more positive events in our lives? Or is there some neurological pathway being affected by the injections of which we’re still unaware? Theories abound.”

With those possibilities in mind, Ritvo wrote of a need for new research that could reinforce a link between emotion and the facial effects of Botox.

“If we can see treatments like Botox as potentially efficacious treatments for real illnesses instead of luxuries for pampered ‘real housewives,’ then we stand a better chance of getting real science behind the anecdotes and real help for patients who need it,” she wrote.

A study in the recent issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal offers the theory that women have a few physical differences that may cause them to show signs of aging more quickly.

The study authors cited the that women have fewer sweat and oil glands – at least in certain parts of the body, such as the region around the mouth. With less oil being produced, researchers note, a woman’s skin will age faster and produce wrinkles sooner than male skin. Also, women have fewer blood vessels in the facial region around the mouth, which means less blood flow, leading to aging skin.

The doctors also noted that women have facial muscles closer to their skin than men do, which can pull on the skin and cause wrinkles. Added to all this, the doctors said, women experience hormonal changes in middle age that lead to less oil production in the skin and therefore more visible lines.

Beyond plastic surgery, the best way women can preserve their skin is to avoid smoking and too much sunlight – and to use moisturizers and skin creams.

Breast reduction surgery has the highest patient satisfaction rate of any cosmetic surgery performed. That’s because breast reduction candidates aren’t just after an improved profile – often, they are in daily pain. Women with large breasts can experience symptoms such as back, neck and shoulder pain, skeletal imbalance, bruising from bra straps and even advanced back and neck disc deterioration.

In the latest episode of Plastic Surgery Talk, host Dr. William P. Adams, Jr. talks with board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joe Gryskiewicz about the different surgical options available for women with overly large breasts. The most common surgical approaches include lipo reduction, minimal scar reduction, and full reduction.

Liposuction reduction: Less than one percent of breast reductions are done this way, which uses conventional liposuction techniques. The procedure is often called the “scarless breast reduction,” but it does involve small incisions. In liposuction breast reduction, fluid is injected into the breast that separates tissue from fat, and then liposuction is performed. It takes less time than other methods because it is done under IV sedation, but leaves the breast deflated instead of lifted.

Minimal scar reduction: This is also called the LeJour method, vertical mammoplasty or the lollipop method. In this surgery, the surgeon cuts around the areola and then down the front of the breast to remove excess tissue. This is also a rarer method due to the fact that patients must be size DDD or smaller for the incision to be large enough for tissue removal. Often, insurance will not cover those patients.

Full breast reduction: This method is also called anchor breast reduction or keyhole breast reduction, in reference to the shape of the incision. It’s also the most common procedure used. In some cases, the nipple has to be removed and grafted back on to preserve the blood supply.

Recovery and Scarring
Recovery after breast reduction surgery is usually one to two weeks. “A lot of patients actually say that the breast doesn’t hurt at all, but the area we did liposuction on hurt them a lot,” says Dr. Joe Gryskiewicz. “I tend to do liposuction on all my patients because they have a little roll coming off the side of the breast, and then that allows you to keep the incision much shorter.”

Another benefit of the surgery is that it acts as a breast lift, as well, with the exception of the liposuction-only method. “A breast lift is where you just take out some skin and lift the nipple — a breast reduction is the exact same thing, only you take out volume at the same time, ” says Dr. Gryskiewicz.

Scars all tend to fade from a lumpy red mark to a thin white line in a few months; scars will be more noticeable in darker skin types. However, for most patients the cosmetic outcome is not as important as the physical outcome of the surgery. “In most patients, the scarring is secondary because these patients are suffering.”

One of the biggest keys to a successful surgery is picking the right surgeon, says Dr. Gryskiewicz. “You want to make sure they are board-certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery and make sure they’ve had appropriate training.” This includes making sure that a doctor’s medical residency matches their current specialty, he notes.

The jowl – that area in the lower cheek that can become fleshy or sag with time – is a tell-tale sign of age as it starts to droop…and a major target for people who want to turn back their facial clocks.

“They’ll say, ‘I don’t mind being 50 or 45, but I don’t want to be 45 with jowls,’” explains Rhode Island plastic surgeon Dr. Patrick Sullivan.

If the surgeon doesn’t take sufficient caution, however, a patient can undergo a jowl operation and walk away with scars. Sullivan cited a woman in her late forties who came to him in hopes of undoing the damage done by an apparently unqualified surgeon that left her with permanent scars on her face and neck.

“What you have to do is make sure that you have a very good surgeon to take care of a problem like this,” he says.

As people age, the jowl areas can deflate and make their chin look bigger. Jowls can be removed or contoured, and Dr. Sullivan performs many operations that are lifting procedures done in layers rather than simply a quick stretching of the skin. Also, to provide a smooth jaw line after the lift, surgeons can employ a fat grafting procedure, using the patient’s own fat tissue from another nearby area to contour the mandible area.

“We give them a nice jaw line with their own fat rather than…something synthetic,” he says. Dr. Sullivan adds that using the patient’s own fat reduces the chance of infection and greatly increases the likelihood that the transplanted tissue will survive. At the same time, to produce the desired final result may require liposuction to get rid of excess fat.
