Chaz Bono loves life as a man — and discussed his transformation with Entertainment Tonight. But, Bono may have some obstacles to overcome before completing the process.
Chaz Bono began formally taking the steps required to become a male in June of 2009, beginning with hormone therapy.
Now Chaz has given his first interview since that decision to Entertainment Tonight, saying he has finally gotten comfortable enough with himself to make the change now that he is coming up on his fortieth birthday.
“I thought it’s now or never,” he said. “I want to still feel vibrant and be able to enjoy my life in a male body and not wait until I am an old man.”
The famous offspring of Cher and Sonny Bono has not changed much in terms of appearance yet, but has been taking hormones to prep for the transformation. “It lowered my voice,” he said. “Fat redistributes, muscle growth, hair growth, sex drive increases.”
However, a friend of Bono’s says Chaz may have to lose weight to go through with the surgery, which includes removal of female organs and physical traits, and addition of male organs and traits.
Bono’s publicist told TMZ.com in a June 2009 interview, “Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity. He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz’s hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his ‘coming out’ did nearly 20 years ago.”
