Kate Winslet recently proved herself a legal force to reckon with — after winning a $40,000 suit against the Daily Mail. But, the money won’t be kept for herself.
Kate Winslet will give her legal winnings to charity – $40,000 in damages she recently won in a suit against Britain’s Daily Mail.
The Mail drew Winslet’s fire after publishing nude photos of her in January alongside an article titled “Should Kate Winslet Win an Oscar for the World’s Most Irritating Actress?” The article reportedly made many false claims, including comments accusing Winslet of lying about her fitness routine.
The released version was both untrue and hurtful enough, the Oscar-winning actress felt, to be worth a day in court. Mail publisher Associated Newspapers Ltd. issued an apology in September, but still had to pay her.
“I am delighted that the Mail have apologized for making false allegations about me,” Winslet said. “I was particularly upset to be accused of lying about my exercise regime and felt that I had a responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues including diet and exercise.”
She added later: “I strongly believe that women should be encouraged to accept themselves as they are, so to suggest that I was lying was an unacceptable accusation of hypocrisy.”
MakeMeHeal.com reports that Winslet, married to Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, has spoken against plastic surgery in years past, calling it the architect of “fantasy figures for a fantasy world.”
She later seemed to change her mind, with reservations. “I am intrigued by surgery but Sam would leave me if I did anything like that,” the site quoted her, following with speculation about her possible rhinoplasty.
Whatever the case, it’s safe to say that though Winslet isn’t the world’s most irritating actress, she may be among the most honest.
