Real Housewives of Orange County didn’t bother to air some of the most “real” footage in its so-called “reality” series. A plastic surgeon helped Lynne Curtin and her daughter Raquel change their minds!
The plastic-surgery happy reality show Real Housewives of Orange County recently missed an opportunity to show how plastic surgeons respond when patients want a procedure that may not be in their best interests.
Nineteen-year-old Raquel Curtin, daughter of Housewives regular Lynne Curtin, was shown undergoing a rhinoplasty at the same time her mother underwent a facelift. But the daughter had also requested a breast implant surgery from the same doctor, who declined to perform it. This portion of the footage was unaired, and only consultation material from the approved surgeries – the nose job and facelift – was televised.
“I was reluctant to perform a breast augmentation,” plastic surgeon Dr. Milind Ambe told the Register. “But I thought a conservative rhinoplasty would be appropriate.”
Dr. Ambe said he felt Raquel Curtin was too young for breast implants, even though, at age 19, she’d hardly be the youngest patient to have such an operation. “I felt that, over the long run, it would have potentially created more problems for her,” the doctor noted.
The surgeon added that breast augmentation patients are getting younger and younger on a national scale. It’s a popular procedure, but that doesn’t make it appropriate for women who are teenagers. And after explaining his reasons, he said, both Lynne and Raquel Curtin saw his point. Among other factors, breast implants often wind up being too heavy for women who are younger than 20 – causing drooping that later requires corrective surgery. In most cases, he said, it’s better to wait.
“Implants have repercussions. The skin can sag more,” Ambe said. “I tell them this would be their first operation, not the last. They’ll probably need a revision ten years or so later.”
