Dr. Oz Show Promotes Solutions Outside the Operating Room

Dr. Oz, who gained public notoriety as Oprah’s go-to guru for healthy living, has a new show focused on diet and lifestyle changes to stay looking young and beautiful.

DR. OZ Oprah health advisor Dr. Mehmet Oz now has his own syndicated talk show, bringing his message of clean living to the masses five days a week.

On the show, the health wizard guides viewers through natural health and wellness wisdom; the episodes are essentially longer versions of the segments he offered on Oprah – lessons and tips on how diet and lifestyle are tied directly to feeling and looking your best. Instead of spreading word that self-improvement only comes through a face lift or liposuction, Dr. Oz is focused on shrinking the root of the problem: lifestyle choices that age us quicker.

True to his mission, the show’s studio only offers healthy foods to the staff.

“The crew is an experiment for us,” Dr. Oz said. “If all I offer you is healthy food, you’re either going to eat that stuff or you’re not going to eat. And most people will eat. After a while, it becomes what you’re used to eating. It’s a little bit every day that makes a difference.”

Oz doesn’t specialize in plastic surgery– he’s a noted cardiothoracic surgeon, accustomed to salvaging malfunctioning hearts. But, he knows all surgery patients begin as people who make lifestyle choices. When wrong choices pile up, surgery seems to be a quick fix.

“I found myself going to work and taking care of people who wanted to get better who believed that their only path to salvation was through my scalpel,” he said. “I can heal with steel. I know how to do that. But it’s very disenfranchising when you realize the true solutions are outside the operating room.”

His advice concerning lifestyle choices holds true for those considering plastic surgery, as well. Although cosmetic procedures can do wonders to reverse the signs of aging and boost self-esteem, it shouldn’t be seen as a panacea for bad behavior, like smoking or tanning, which can wreak havoc on your skin over time. Those who think that Botox will erase such past regrets — celebrities included — would be wise to heed Dr. Oz’s counsel. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
