Juvéderm Injectable Gel

Juvéderm is an injectable gel used by cosmetic, dermatological and plastic surgeons that softens the deep folds in the face and reduces wrinkles. Juvéderm uses hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin, muscles and tendons of mammals. It is the only hyaluronic acid filler approved by the FDA.

How Juvéderm Works

Juvéderm is injected under the skin to restore the skin’s volume and remove nasolabial folds or “smile lines,” the creases of skin which run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. The injectable gel can also be used to augment the lips, fill in the hollow places of face, and help clear facial scars.

Juvéderm gel is injected in the mid- to deep dermis to correct moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. The treatment is administered by a healthcare professional, and the process takes 15 minutes and results can be seen immediately. Juvéderm facial filler lasts six to nine months before it is absorbed by the body.

Risks Involved

As with other procedures, side effects are possible when getting a Juvederm treatment.  Side effects can include temporary redness, pain, and tenderness on the injected area. Swelling and bruising are also common. The Juvéderm treatment can also lead to more serious side effects like facial lumps and bumps known as granulomas due to reactions with the immune system. These reactions are very difficult to treat.

Juvéderm treatment is not advisable for those who have severe allergies, especially those people who have a history of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening hypersensitivity to some drugs and proteins. Doctors may also recommend avoiding the intake of drugs such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories a week prior to the treatment as this may prolong bleeding.

After Care

Strenuous activities should be avoided for the first 24 hours after the treatment. It is also advised to avoid excessive sun or heat exposure and avoid alcoholic beverages. In cases where swelling shows up on the injected site, a person may apply an ice pack to the area. It is also advisable to ask the doctor when it’s best to apply makeup again.

It is very important to find a very experienced healthcare professional before deciding to get Juvéderm. These healthcare professionals should discuss important considerations of the Juvéderm treatment and ensure the safety of the patient.
