It’s Complicated, a new romantic comedy, includes plastic surgery in its storyline. What do the movie’s three middle-aged stars think about the phenomenon?
In the new romantic comedy It’s Complicated, Meryl Streep plays a character who considers plastic surgery after her husband leaves her for a younger woman. That’s only one element of the movie’s plot, but Streep and co-stars Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin recently discussed plastic surgery in an interview with MTV News – sharing their thoughts about people who go under the knife.
Martin, who has reportedly never had plastic surgery, admitted that the stereotypes about it don’t always match the real-life results. He said he’s not against it in theory, as long as a patient doesn’t take it too far and begin to resemble a “non-person.”
Baldwin said more or less the same thing – that plastic surgery is fine as long as it isn’t taken overboard. And earlier in 2009, he said in a Playboy interview that the only thing good about being 51, as he is now, is having plenty of hair, even if it’s getting gray. He said having dark hair is what he misses most about being younger – and that, quote, “when you get older, you look older, and there’s nothing you can do.”
Meryl Streep, now 60, didn’t offer her thoughts about plastic surgery during the recent MTV interview. However, she made it clear in 2008 that she’s no friend to the trend. MakeMeHeal.com quoted her as saying she didn’t understand the urge, but seemed amazed at how many people have the need to alter themselves – actors and actresses, both. She added that, to her, the good thing about aging is that all her acting offers revolve around playing an interesting character, not being the gorgeous leading lady. In these cases, she said, actors can play roles that examine all the idiosyncrasies real people have. Streep finished by saying that people should celebrate life and embrace getting older.
