Mariah Carey, typically radiant from all angles, drastically changed her appearance for a supporting role in the acclaimed new drama Precious.

Carey plays a social worker who gradually plays a large role in the girl’s life. The famed singer herself looks fairly downtrodden in this film, by design.
At casual glance, you wouldn’t recognize Carey underneath layers of plain-spun frump. Originally, Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren was slated to play this part before choosing another role at the last minute.
“Somebody just said to me, ‘You are so ugly in this movie.’” Carey told USA Today. “Lee really wanted it. It was beyond ordinary. I can deal with a no-makeup look. But he went beyond. He did dark circles under the eyes and a prosthetic nose that made me break out.”
Carey does indeed look different in the film – departing so much from how we’re used to seeing her that the character removes all traces of Carey’s possible real-life plastic surgery. In March 2008, MakeMeHeal.com displayed photos of her and, based on them, speculated about breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, Botox injections and liposuction. Generally speaking, Carey looks too good in everyday life to simply be all-natural, though she denies any procedures.
“One of the rumors I just heard about was that I spent $150,000 in plastic surgery,” MakeMeHeal.com cites her saying. “What in the ham sandwich do they think I did? It’s very annoying.”
