Mastopexy! Also know as a breast lift - Dr. Bruce Van Natta discusses pearls of mastopexy in this PSC 101 exclusive.
What is a mastopexy?
If you have experienced pregnancy and breast feeding, weight loss or just got some not-so-great genetics you may have loose skin of the breasts resulting in sagging or droopiness. I’ve heard many women complain after childbirth that “those kids sucked the life out of my breasts!”
Well there is a way to restore shape and firmness to your breasts and that involves a surgical procedure known as Breast Lift or Mastopexy.
Breast lift generally involves a tightening of the skin of the breast—think of it as tightening your “skin brassiere”. The exact nature or the procedure will vary according to your tissues, the amount of stretch and your desired result. The type of surgery you chose will determine the number and location of scars. An important tradeoff to consider is that you will have scars, although generally somewhat hidden or not too noticeable over time. One thing that a breast lift can’t provide long term is fullness of the top of the breast. If you want to see fullness in the upper pole of the breast you may need a breast implant as well as the skin lift procedure.
How can I pick a surgeon for my mastopexy?
As always, it is very important that you seek out an experienced surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Be sure to ask around for references and don’t be afraid to ask a prospective surgeon about the number of breast surgeries they do each year. Remember, experience matters. Also, be sure to check the PSC website for even more information on mastopexy and all important plastic surgery topics.
