Memory Gel breast implants use a new generation of silicone gel technology that research shows is safer than saline implants and poses less risk of re-operation for the patient. In a special report from The Plastic Surgery Channel, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kiya Movassaghi explains the advantages of Memory Gel silicone breast implants and the next generation of Shape Stable implants currently in FDA clinical trials.
Today’s silicone gel implants, like the Memory Gel breast implant manufactured by Mentor Corporation, use a more cohesive gel and more durable shell than earlier generations and are proven safer than saline-filled implants, research shows.
Silicone gel breast implants got a bad rap in the 1990s, after the FDA first put a moratorium on use of the implants for cosmetic purposes and manufacturer Dow Corning subsequently got hit with thousands of lawsuits, pushing the company into bankruptcy.
However, after nearly a decade of intense scrutiny, including exhaustive research studies in the U.S. and overseas, the FDA once again approved the use of silicone gel-filled breast implants in late 2006.
In this special report from the 2009 Aesthetic Meeting, Dr. Kiya Movassaghi, a board certified plastic surgeon and Assistant Clinical Professor at Oregon Health & Science University, explains the advances in silicone gel breast implant technology, including the cohesivity of the Memory Gel breast implants, as well as the new Shape Stable implants (also called “gummy bear” implants) currently under review by the FDA.
