Nicole Richie Sitcom in the Works

Nicole Richie, daughter of singer Lionel Richie and erstwhile star of The Simple Life, is set to star in a new sitcom about motherhood. But, will fans buy the socialite as a parenting expert?

Nicole Richie lands new TV dealFormer Simple Life star Nicole Richie has just landed a deal with a major network for a new project. The 28-year-old socialite is in talks with ABC about a new show which she produce and star in. No dates or titles have been given for the project.

“The story revolves around a young, modern and professional woman who must balance her business and family relationships,” Richie writes on her Website. “She must deal with, and navigate the many ideas of what a woman’s role is: modern vs. traditional.” Richie says the show was inspired by all the different women she has worked with since she has become a mom.

Richie is also a different sized woman than she used to be. While on The Simple Life, Paris Hilton occupied the role of “the skinny one” and Nicole settled for sidekick. At just 5’1”, Richie weighed in at nearly 130 while on the show, later blaming her size on drugs and alcohol. But after The Simple Life ended, sudden weight loss had the New York Post‘s Page Six talking gastric bypass.

Richie got down to 90 pounds before seeking help. When she began to regain some weight, Page Six ran this blind item: “WHICH young Hollywood starlet had secret gastric bypass surgery, but then lost too much weight? During a recent four-day stint at a health clinic, she was actually having an operation to remove the bypass.”

Richie never confirmed the hospital stay or said what it might have been for, instead using her MySpace page to deny the claim: “So i gain a little bit of weight, and im acussed of having a gastric bypass surgery reversed? Its pathetic of Page Six to insinuate i have done this. Anyone that knows anything about this surgery would know that legally, you must be AT LEAST 100 pounds overweight to even have the surgery done, and is a serious, life changing procedure; not one to throw around as a joke or a rumor.”

Perhaps the rumored health clinic retreat was for a mommy makeover? Only those closest to Ms. Richie know for sure. Meanwhile, the former reality TV star is hard at work not only planning a sitcom, but also writing her second novel and getting ready to launch clothing and shoe labels.
