Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin To Host Oscars

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will host the 2010 Oscars together. The pair should get lots of laughs, barring any interruptions from Kanye West.

martinbaldwinAlec Baldwin and Steve Martin are joining forces for the Oscar stage this next time around, hosting a show set to air March 7, 2010. This will give the show a comic edge lacking in the 2009 telecast, where Hugh Jackman’s appearance was heavy on musical showmanship.

Martin has hosted the Oscars before – and Baldwin, currently starring in the smash comedy 30 Rock, has been a presenter. Both, of course, have miles of Saturday Night Live hosting behind them.

“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” Martin said in a statement.

“I just got lucky,” Baldwin said about his gig.

The next Oscar show will need a double-dose of comic ability, since the Best Picture nominees will be a number of ten rather than five. One host alone couldn’t mock all those titles. It’s also welcoming to see Oscar producers letting two older people take the reins of an annual show that sometimes goes the youth-driven way. Baldwin is 51 and Martin is 64. Both look roundabout their ages – though Martin seems to have had white hair since around 1982. Neither actor has any confirmed tie to plastic surgery; that cosmetic absence seems to be fine by them.

“When you get older, you look older, and there’s nothing you can do,” Baldwin told Playboy in July 2009. Martin, often philosophical himself, had fun with the fact that People magazine named him one of the “50 Most Beautiful People in the World” in 2003.

“It’s very hard being one of the most beautiful people,” he said. “Having this kind of beauty is actually a burden. Sometimes I go to a party and not one of the other 49 most beautiful people is there. That makes me feel very solitary and alone, because it means I am the most beautiful person in the room. If I’m going to a party where I know there will be ‘less-beautiful people,’ I try to ‘dress down’ in order to hide my beauty. But this seems to have a counter-effect of actually making me more beautiful. I guess me and dungarees are a pretty potent combination.”
