A reported 5.3 million viewers during its most recent season wasn’t enough. Several Emmy nominations and even one Emmy award wasn’t enough.

ABC network representatives have confirmed the rejection of Ugly Betty‘s fifth season, with plans to end the show in 2010. The network cites low numbers as the cause – despite attempts to gain viewers by shuffling the show from Friday to Wednesday, airing it after the popular Cougar Town.

“We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty‘s final season,” executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC President Steve McPherson said in a joint statement, according to Yahoo! TV Blog. “We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

Ugly Betty won an “Outstanding Leading Actress” Emmy award for star America Ferrera in 2007. The show also included three Emmy nominations for co-star Vanessa Williams, who played catty, power-hungry former supermodel Wilhelmina Slater.

On the show, Slater depends comedically on plastic surgery to maintain her features; in real life, Williams, now 46, has consulted some injectables herself. A MakeMeHeal.com story included comparison photos, plus comments she made to Barbara Walters admitting her love of wrinkle remover. “I certainly do Botox, which I definitely think that almost every woman that I know has,” she said. “And it’s a miracle drug, no cutting, nothing I did it after I turned 40, but I told the doctor, ‘My face has got to move. I am not looking for perfection, I am looking for refreshment.’”

The Yahoo! blog added that the show has generally always been a high-profile turnout. Cameos included guest stars such as Salma Hayek, Lindsay Lohan, Martha Stewart, Naomi Campbell, Victoria Beckham and Lucy Liu.

Despite all the plusses, though, and the show’s popularity, it’s on its way out.

Botox helps smooth out the marks of age

Is vanity, or something more surprising, affecting the Chinese government? Reports say that more than 500 government officials undergo cosmetic surgery, annually.

Dr. Chen Huanran of Beijing’s Union Medical College explained that many more politicians are having plastic surgery to look youthful for appearances in public and on television. He said that at least 20 percent of his patients are government officials – often between the ages of 40 and 60. Among them, Dr. Chen said, the most popular procedure is the eyelid lift, along with Botox injections and wrinkle fillers. At the same time, many of them prefer to have their surgeries at remote clinics, and often at night. This helps keep their cosmetic changes as secretive as possible.

Dr. Chen also said many of these government officials try to undergo plastic surgery during holidays or in between times of official business.

“Lots of publicity and marketing companies also give plastic surgery as gifts to government figures and the bosses of state-owned companies, as well as to their wives,” sources quoted him saying.

Sources also cite Xinhua, China’s official government news agency, in reporting that revenues for plastic surgery are currently growing at a rate of 20 percent each year. Much of this demand appears to relate to China’s competitive job market. More and more career hopefuls are undergoing cosmetic procedures to look younger, to have “perfect” facial symmetry – or to even be taller, thanks to advancements in leg lengthening.

A major cause of this surge could be the fact that many job ads in China include physical requirements for height and weight. Technically, Chinese labor laws don’t forbid the announcement of such requirements, and so many employers include them. The result? Plastic surgery now affects the entire populace – from the government heads down to ordinary workers.

The cosmetic nip-and-tuck is hardly an exclusive American phenomenon, and a new show demonstrates this by focusing on plastic surgery in Ireland.

Presenter Caroline Morahan and plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Rey will co-host The Cosmetic Surgery Show: What A Load of Botox, set to premiere January 13 on Ireland’s TV3. The show offers glimpses into various cosmetic procedures – liposuction, Botox injections and breast augmentation, among others –as well as in-studio discussions of plastic surgery and public poll information. Morahan is an Irish actress best known for a five-year stint on the fashion show Off the Rails. Rey, a Hollywood surgeon, is a media veteran, having made dozens of appearances on shows including Dr. Phil, The Today Show, The View and Dr. 90210. Ironically, however, Dr. Rey is not board certified in plastic surgery.

The plastic surgery market abroad seems to be well in tune with today’s high American statistics. The United Kingdom alone sports some healthy figures, according to data from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. In 2008, association members performed 34,187 surgeries, a 5 percent increase over 2007. Of that number, a grand majority of these operations were performed on women – and the most popular choice was breast augmentation. Also, from 2007 to 2008, the tummy tuck saw a 30 percent increase in demand among both men and women, though males most often preferred rhinoplasty.

As in America, this rising rate shows no sign of receding. And so any show that delves into the growing trend of plastic surgery will certainly have good odds of having a sizable interested viewership. Whether the show will keep them is the question.

She’s a former model, a mother of ten and now a great-grandmother – and today, thanks to plastic surgery, she has reinvented herself.

Fifty-seven-year-old Annette Edwards, who also happens to own the world’s largest bunny, recently spent thousands of dollars on a week of plastic surgeries in London, including a breast lift, Botox injections, chin implants and a brow lift.

She also spent three months dieting so she could better resemble Jessica Rabbit, the famous cartoon redhead from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Why? According to Edwards, she just loves rabbits.

In an interview, Edwards admitted her children think the new look is a little mad – but at this point, she said, nothing she does can really shock them.

A new study in the United Kingdom shows that many girls between ages 11 and 21 would consider having plastic surgery.

A survey of more than a thousand girls showed that by age 10, girls begin worrying about their figure. And 24 percent of the girls ages 16 to 21 said they’d consider having plastic surgery.

Twelve percent of girls between 11 and 16 said they would consider it, and 5 percent of them said they would think about getting Botox injections.

Parliament member Jo Swinson said the idealized female images in advertising are putting pressure on girls to want to change how they look – even at very young ages.

The problem here, she said, is that young girls want to attain an appearance that is unattainable but they don’t yet know that. Video plays below.

A plastic surgeon has admitted to deliberately marrying a woman that he could improve to his liking by operating on her.

A man named Reza Vossough said he married a 33-year-old waitress named Cany after he saw her “potential.” He claimed he didn’t much like how she looked at the time, but after their wedding, he performed eight operations on her over the next five years. He gave her breast implants, lip enhancements, Botox injections, an eyelid lift and nip-and-tuck operations on her buttocks, stomach and thighs.

Today, Dr. Vossough says, he’s in love with her. He said his job is close to being God, giving him the ability to change nature. He also recently said his wife may be getting a face lift someday soon.

And, his wife was quoted as saying, “’When your husband is a plastic surgeon, then the scalpel is your friend.” Video plays below.

Adult film star Janine Lindemulder and actress Sandra Bullock are currently locked in debate about the best interests of Sunny, the five-year-old daughter born to Lindemulder and Jesse James – a TV personality known from biker shows like Monster Garage.

The struggle stems from Lindemulder’s recent six-month prison stint in Oregon for tax evasion. She lost custody of her daughter after her conviction in late 2008. Now out of prison and living in a halfway house through 2009, the adult starlet, veteran of more than 100 adult films, argues that she remains a better mother for Sunny than Bullock.

Lindemulder sent ex-husband James a text message from prison reading “U win. Sandra finally has her baby – congratulations.” But reportedly, Lindemulder will seek to regain custody after leaving the halfway house. James has already asked a judge in Orange County, California, to decide which woman represents the better mom.

“Good cause exists for the court to conduct a review to determine if [Sunny] will be safe with [Janine],”James said in a statement to the court. “She should be restrained from allowing the child around pornographers, drug addicts, guns and firearms, felons and other unsafe environments.”

Bullock, who has never had children, recently commented on the situation to the degree that she is quite suited for parenting.

“I may never hear that word ‘mom’. But being a parent is not about breeding,” she said. “It’s about caring. And it’s easy to say, but it’s harder to do. When you don’t have that title, you flounder and it hurts. But this is the best test of being a parent. And I just have to keep reminding myself I don’t care what I get. I care what I give.”

Their careers may thrive on polar ends of a spectrum, but both Janine Lindemulder and Sandra Bullock use their appearances to augment their talents. Neither actress has concrete ties to plastic surgery – not now or in the past – but Bullock has been rumored to favor Botox injections, and Lindemulder has gotten the expected buzz about breast implants. Admittedly, their resumes have nothing in common. But, based on their own words, neither woman has perfection in mind.

“We all have cellulite,” Bullock told InStyle. “So do supermodels! I’ve been to the shows and I go, ‘Stick figure has some cellulite!’ It’s nature. Without it, you’re not human.”

Lindemulder’s official site includes a long interview offering her insights – including how she maintains her image through fitness. She makes no mention of plastic surgery.

“I’ll do about three months heavy training and then three months off,” she said. “Life’s too short to obsess about your body.”

Most teens experience the embarrassment of their moms talking about them to other people. But, for Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, that talk is on a grander scale–like having your mom blab to the media about your new solo project.

Parade Magazine released quotes from its upcoming weekend issue today, including Mrs. Jonas spilling the beans on Nick’s new gig.

“Nick is working on a solo act–it’s called Nick Jonas and The Administration. Shhh! He’s at the photo shoot for the album cover right now,” Denise Jonas gabbed.

In response, the Jonas Brothers Website confirmed that the other bandmembers do support their brother, and that no, the band is not breaking up. “We are ALL excited about this project AND what we are doing TOGETHER! We plan to make music together for as long as we can,” Joe, Nick and Kevin blogged on their site.

The Disney-sponsored brother band made its acting debut on Hannah Montana, and several stars from Disney shows and movies have gone on to be megastars, including Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus and Ashley Tisdale. But, the brothers better watch out: it seems growing up Disney means growing up a little faster.

Several Disney stars have gone on to lead out-of-control lives, including Spears and Lohan. While Tisdale admitted to a nose job to fix a deviated septum, Lohan is speculated to have had breast augmentation and multiple lip injections (not to mention issues with alcohol abuse).

Britney also may have indulged in both procedures, and has complained about her post-baby body, with a friend telling in InTouch Weekly that she wanted liposuction on her thighs, which she considered “too fat.” At least her hair looks good.

But, unlike these stars, Nick has his brothers to share the spotlight and keep any wild behavior in check.

Nick’s new album is set to release in early 2010.

Comedienne Ellen DeGeneres has a growing list of job titles, from actress to talk show host to spokesperson for CoverGirl Cosmetics. She’s also just become a judge on American Idol and says she intends to be a voice for the people. That’s a lot of time in the spotlight. And, recent photos of a more glammed up Ellen have led some to wonder if she’s had plastic surgery in preparation for her new Idol gig.

The pundits at MakeMeHeal.com speculate that DeGeneres, now 51, recently had a face lift and eye lift. They also say it’s possible she has opted for a brow lift, neck lift and Botox injections.

DeGeneres hasn’t talked publicly about having any work done. If and when she does, odds are it would be comedy gold.
