The Italian government has banned breast enhancement surgery for girls younger than 18, according to the Telegraph UK.

The government says main reason for the ban is to protect teenage girls from possible complications and health risks. Francesca Martini of the Italian Welfare Ministry says girls this age are too concerned with fashion and appearance to consider the physical risks involved when their mammary glands aren’t fully formed.

“Far too many adolescent girls are unaware of the fact that there are risks with this type of surgery and it should not be used purely for fashion and looks. At the moment we have a Wild West, cowboy style system of plastic surgery for young women and this must stop,” Martini said in a statement.

A survey also indicated that 30 percent of Italian girls ages 16 and 17 reported feeling unsatisfied with how they look. Fourteen percent of the girls in the survey said they would have breast augmentation surgery to fix this.

Martini explained that the ministry is considering outlawing all breast enhancement surgeries for underage girls unless there is a valid medical reason.

Photoshop may cover a multitude of sins, but two of the most common procedures for models still include rhinoplasty and breast enhancement.

One Victoria’s Secret model says she has a temporary fix that circumvents breast implant surgery and gets the job done. “I do believe in chicken fillets,” Rosie Huntington-Whiteley told UK paper The Times. “I’m not saying you have to use them, but if anyone knows me and sees me in a photoshoot, well, there are friends in there. I’ve been known to have three in at a time for shoots — plus padding.”

By “chicken fillets,” the model is referring to the rubbery, chicken-breast shaped enhancers sold by VS and other lingerie outlets.

She also says she makes sure she gets some color before lingerie shoots. “I won’t do a lingerie shoot unless I’m tanned,” Huntington-Whiteley says. “I think most women will admit that they look better when they’re brown. I fake tan — but I don’t recommend sunbeds — and at work, they’ll put body make-up on.”

She adds that her secret for eliminating puffiness and wrinkles is pretty simple: water.

“Drink a big bottle of water every day, as it will take away puffiness — Fiji is best. Everybody rolls their eyes at this tip, but it does work. Water is the drug of God, that’s what I say,” she told The Times.

Huntington-Whiteley may have found alternatives to plastic surgery, but many models still opt for going under the knife. MakeMeHeal.com asserts that fellow Victoria’s Secret models Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen and Selita Ebanks all sport breast implants rather than chicken fillets.

Huntington-Whiteley, possibly enhanced with chicken fillets, will be featured in the Victoria’s Secret Valentine’s Day Wild at Heart campaign.

A man in the United Kingdom who says he has been living a s a woman for ten years wants breast augmentation surgery, but has been refused. Now, he is claiming sex discrimination and has made a case against his health care organization.

The transsexual, known only as “C,” hasn’t yet had a sex change operation but has reportedly had hormone treatments to become more feminine. He claims breast augmentation would help complete his female identity. But, C has been denied this operation since 2006.

C is claiming discrimination. But the attorney for the West Berkshire Primary Care Trust organization said C was denied because his request for breast augmentation coverage didn’t meet their “exceptional” criteria for funding.

An appeal hearing was scheduled for earlier this week. We’ll keep you posted on the outcome.

Recently, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery surveyed member surgeons about current trends in breast augmentation.

The results show a continued preference for natural looking results by both the plastic surgeons and their patients.

The average implant size used by most of the surgeons who responded to the survey is 300 – 400 cc’s, or about a full C cup.

The majority of the surgeons surveyed–more than 60%–place the implants under the chest muscle rather than on top of the muscle, again aiming for the most natural look possible.

The ASAPS survey also showed that 60% of member surgeons are still using saline implants, and revealed that when silicone gel was chosen over saline filling, the reason most often cited was “patient preference.”

Dr. Alan Gold, president of ASAPS, noted that good results actually depend more on “patient-appropriate” surgical techniques than on the type of implant chosen.
