Dr. Brad Calobrace, a  board certified plastic surgeon from says, as the popularity of breast augmentation continues to rise, it’s important to recognize a couple of potential pitfalls in the surgical procedure.

Breast Implant Selection is Critically Important

“One of the greatest pitfalls, is in the process of breast implant selection,” says Calobrace, a contributing editor for ThePlasticSurgeryChannel.com. He says, “Choosing the right implant is one of the most significant keys to avoiding a poor outcome.”

According to Calobrace, choosing the implant should be a partnership between the patient and the plastic surgeon. During a patient consultation, the plastic surgeon should critically evaluate the breast and determine the range of possibilities for the patient.

Calobrace says each breast processes a footprint that helps to determine which implant will be best accommodated by the individual’s breast tissue. He says, “Anything outside of the range increases the risk of a poor outcome due to the unpredictable stretching of the breast tissue. Stretching of the breast tissue can lead to mal-positioning of implants, such as implants sitting high on the chest, uneven implants, ‘bottomed-out’ implants or implants that cross the mid-line in the cleavage area. Calobrace states, “proper implant selection can help avoid these problems.”

Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon

The second key to avoid a poor outcome in breast augmentation surgery is finding a board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Calobrace says, “It’s important to find the right surgeon with the knowledge and experience to educate the patient, assist in choosing the appropriate implant with the perfect fit and then perform the breast augmentation with the highest level of expertise and commitment to the patient’s well-being.” Calobrace says, “the goal is to find the perfect fit, not only in the choice of implant, but also in the choice of surgeon.”
