Breast Augmentation: One Size Doesn’t Fit All

When it comes to breast augmentation, there are so many options to consider. Sometimes the type of breast surgery you select may depend on your age, the region you live in, even your attitude and relationship with your surgeon.

“Patients that come to me want a cup size;  possibly a two to three cup size difference,” says board certified plastic surgeon, Laurie Casas, MD. “Everyone is different, it all depends on a woman’s circumference and build.”

Who Are the Best Candidates?

Women may select breast augmentation surgery to enhance their breast size or to fill out skin that is now empty following pregnancy, breast feeding or weight loss. By inserting an implant filled with saline or silicone behind each breast, usually under the muscle, Dr. Casas improves the breast shape while increasing the bustline.

“There are two types of candidates, young women who didn’t achieve breast development and those who are healthy and just want a change. They need to be mature enough to understand there is some pain and risk involved.” The best candidate fully understands the process.

Consultation and Answering a Patient’s Concerns

Some typical questions at a consultation surround what type of breast implant, what size of implant and the overall result.  At Casas Aesthetic Plastic Surgery located in Chicago, most patients are asking for a natural look.

“My patients here in the Midwest are afraid of looking too large and typically only share that they are having the procedure with those taking care of them post-operatively; it’s a private experience.”

Step by step, Casas explores with the patient what they are trying to achieve.

Breast Augmentation Success Rate

Casas prides herself on meeting her patients’ expectations and delivering results with a 98 percent success rate. She sits on the Board of Directors for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).  She suggests patients check their surgeons credentials and experience before having breast augmentation.

Recovery Following Breast Augmentation

A one night hospital stay is optional with the procedure, but women with small children often elect to stay an extra night or two to avoid excess exercise too soon after surgery.

Casas’ Chicago clinic provides a schedule of follow-up visits and appointments along with a lymphatic massage therapist prior to the procedure. The massage is helpful in healing and reducing fluids and swelling around the implants.

When it comes to work, it’s often possible to return to your job within a week. Vigorous exercise, particularly arm movement, may be restricted for two to four weeks.
