Meredith Baxter: I’m a Lesbian

Meredith Baxter, former star of the popular television sitcom Family Ties and countless made-for-TV movies on Lifetime, recently confirmed that she’s gay despite three marriages.

meredith baxter comes outMeredith Baxter, now 62, has recently come out of the closet to admit being a lesbian – but by her explanation, she actually hasn’t been “in the closet” all that long. The actress, long known as Meredith Baxter-Birney, who played Elyse Keaton on Family Ties, has been with her current female partner for four years. She’d been married to three men – her first marriage dating back to 1966 – and now has five children.

“It was a later-in-life recognition of that fact,” she explained about her lesbianism on the December 2 episode of the Today show. “Some people are saying, ‘Were you living a lie?’ And, you know, the truth is, not at all. This has only been in the past seven years.”

Although her acting career has taken a back seat to guest appearances on television shows, Baxter still looks radiant in the spotlight. Perhaps it’s due to her skin care regimen. Several years ago, the blonde television mom launched the Meredith Baxter Simple Works line of skin care products,. She also used some of the profits to benefit the Meredith Baxter Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Baxter herself is a breast cancer survivor and still helps raise money for related programs, possibly such as reconstructive breast augmentation.

“I would be at trade shows to present Simple Works and women – some of them still wearing head scarves because of radiation treatment – would see the pink ribbon and want to talk to me,” she told Health News Digest in February 2009. “My first reaction was to close down and not want to talk, but I began to open up, slowly. We’d talk and cry and share stories and it helped me get rid of that shame. It can be a slow process, but I came to learn that healing emotionally is as important as healing physically.”
