Finding the right combination of diet, exercise and alcohol – to lose weight? You bet!  Before we get this party started though let’s examine a couple of conflicting stories.

A Washington State University study analyzed fat metabolism in mice given resveratrol, finding that it promoted conversion of normal white fat cells into brown fat, which is associated with higher metabolism and less weight retention. Yep, remember resveratrol – that magical term is being used a lot in health circles when it comes to metabolism.

But here’s’ the deal … what works on mice, doesn’t necessarily work on people. Meanwhile, many reports on the paper emphasized the high calorie content of wine, and suggested that we might be better off getting our antioxidants from berries and fruits.

Hmm….sounds like something our parents have spent a lifetime telling us! Eat your fruits and veggies. Oh and … maybe pair it with a glass of wine?

“Because wine has fermented the sugars into alcohol, it wreaks less havoc with blood sugar levels,” says Richard Baxter, MD, author of Age Gets Better With Wine.

Lost in the sea of scientific jargon is the way resveratrol can create brown fat, which can mean weight loss in people, not just mice!

If resveratrol can be proven to promote the formation of brown fat it would be another good indicator of a weight control miracle. Here’s the bottom line: More research needs to be done – so feel free to toast to new science, but don’t over- ndulge on those libations, just yet.
