Bung Hole Beauty – Is Anal Rejuvenation a Legitimate Procedure?

In the latest episode of No Spin Live, board certified plastic surgeons discuss one surgeon-turned anal rejuvenator’s quest to use vaginal tightening technology on the anus. Is this in any way similar to the actual success of vaginal tightening via devices like ThermiVa? Or another sort-of successful procedure driven more by profits and hype than results?

Anal Rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation is certainly here to say with devices like ThermiVa that produce real results. Radiofrequency energy and/or lasers are used in these procedures to gently heat up the tissue, causing tightening that provides benefits for all sorts of issues. Incontinence and even an improvement in orgasm are some of the results routinely found with vaginal rejuvenation procedures.

Can the same technology work for the anus? One surgeon seems to think so, but not the No Spin Live panel surgeons.

“This story is a permutation of vaginal rejuvenation,” explains board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jason Pozner of Florida. “People started to think if you start to use these lasers and radiofrequency devices to tighten up vaginas which have been loosened after child birth, fixed up some incontinence, and menopausal tightening of the mucosa. People started saying, ‘Well, can we use it in the anus and in the rectum to tighten up some of those things there?’ Anatomically the mucosa of the vagina is different from the mucosa inside your colon, so I think it’s kind of a bad idea to stick hot objects up your rectum to try and do things there. Hot stuff doesn’t belong there because it could lead to burns. The danger there is it’s untested.

The Anus is not the Vagina

Even if some form of rejuvenation is possible, the risks with performing this procedure in the anus are much greater than that of the vagina. The anatomy of the two are different in ways that count when it comes to using heat on tissue.

“I feel like this is an example of reality imitating fiction in that Dr. Gordon and I – who use these radiofrequency devices for vaginal rejuvenation – have talked about for awhile; the next thing you know, someone is going to want to use this for anal rejuvenation,” shares board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Dustin Reid of Austin. “Second, this is not the realm of plastic surgery; this isn’t a plastic surgeon who has done this. The guy in the article is a cardiothoracic surgeon who just made this his little niche practice.”

Dr. Ashley Gordon, a board certified plastic surgeon and practice partner to Dr. Reid, wonders how such a leap is made. “How do you go from a cardiac surgeon to anal rejuvenator?”

It’s a good question.

Profit vs. Results in Non-Surgical Procedures

There is no denying the intense interest of non-surgical devices and what they can achieve without surgery. Patients – many of whom have never and may never consider surgery – are suddenly quite interested in the idea of cosmetic improvement sans scalpel, and are willing to pay almost as much for it. For the anal rejuvenator, this works out well financially-speaking – regardless of result integrity.

“It’s finanically-driven,” says Reid. “I just want to repeat what Jason said: the anus is not the vagina, the mucosa is not the same, the musculature is not the same. If you go too deep and you’re in the rectum, that’s a catastrophe. You could die. People have been wanting to make their anus more attractive for a long time, but probably it’s going to take one person to have this disaster or more and more people are gonna do it.”
