On the latest episode of Hey Doc!, hosts welcometo discuss plastic surgery for men.
Once considered a female-dominated domain, plastic surgery is seeing a surge in male patients seeking both surgical and non-surgical enhancements. In a recent Hey Doc! episode, hosts Dr. William P. Adams Jr. and Dr. Rod Rohrich are joined by expert Dr. Renee Burke, Dr. Armando Soto, and Dr. John Q. Cook to explore this shift, driven by desires for a corporate edge, personal confidence, and societal acceptance.
The Rise of Male Cosmetic Procedures: From Botox to Body Contouring
The panel confirms a noticeable uptick in men seeking plastic surgery, a trend Dr. Rohrich introduces: “More men are coming in because they want to get a leg up in the corporate world or they want to feel better about themselves.” Dr. Soto observes, “I’m seeing more men that used to come in… later in the day or off hours, but it’s pretty common.” Botox kickstarted this trend, but now men are opting for “fillers, jawline fillers… upper eyelid surgery,” as Armando notes, emphasizing subtlety to avoid unnatural results: “It has to be very subtle… otherwise it looks weird.”
Dr. Cook sees a blend of surgical and non-surgical preferences: “Botox has been around for men quite some time… but there’s a lot of emphasis on the jawline and neck… these are the key zones.” He ties this to a competitive world where men seek a “dynamic look” for professional and personal reasons. Social acceptance has shifted, too. Dr. Soto adds, “It’s almost like an outcast if you’re not doing it… a badge of honor among some younger guys.” Older men in competitive fields also join in, aiming to “stay looking healthy,” as he puts it.
The discussion highlights newer technologies like radio frequency and ultrasound skin tightening, which Dr. Soto praises: “They can come in, go home, and go to work the next day.” Soft Wave therapy, a non-invasive treatment, is a game-changer, especially for weight loss patients. Dr. Soto shares, “I lost a bunch of weight last year and… I’m just really not [dripping in skin] because of the Soft Wave treatment.” Muscle stimulators also help men maintain tone post-injury or surgery, addressing concerns about “hypertrophying or shrinking down,” as Dr. Rohrich notes.
Unique Needs of Male Patients: Communication and Expectations
Men approach cosmetic surgery differently, often requiring tailored communication. Dr. Rohrich reflects on stereotypes: “Men have always been… stereotyped as poor communicators.” Dr. Soto agrees, noting men are “less patient… they want kind of an instant result.” This impatience can clash with the gradual nature of treatments like Soft Wave, where “over time they’re gonna see more and more improvement,” he explains. Male patients also prefer quick recovery, pushing surgeons to emphasize non-invasive options.
Dr. Cook stresses individualized consultations: “Talk to the patient and find out what is their focus… you want to be a problem solver.” Botox is a popular entry point, as it’s “one of the easiest things you can do,” often leading to further procedures. Dr. Burke highlights evolving attitudes: “They’re embracing it and loving it and letting us use their images on social media, which was never a thing.” Men are also motivated by partners who’ve had procedures, avoiding comments like “Is this your dad?” as Dr. Rohrich humorously notes.
Pain management differs, too. Dr. Rohrich quips, “Women are way tougher,” citing cannabinoids like CBD to keep men off opioids. Despite playful jabs at men’s “selective hearing,” the panel sees openness growing, with men candid about their aesthetic goals.
Empowering Men Through Aesthetic Choices
This Hey Doc! episode underscores the rising tide of men embracing plastic surgery for confidence and competitiveness. From jawline fillers to Soft Wave therapy, options abound, but subtlety and clear communication are key. Dr. Cook’s advice resonates: “Find out what is their focus.”
